Look Busy Today have a few questions for the award winning writer-director, Ranjeet S. Marwa. The man who has taken on Victor Wright's The Trees That Bled, which starts production in a few weeks time!
As a writer what makes you pick up the pen?
RANJEETIn my early days of filmmaking, i never used to write anything down, if i had an idea, i would base my whole film around that one idea i had. To the actors, it made no sense, but once the final film was made, it was all smiles. Now, i only write if im inspired by something, if im not, i wont write, simple. Like Quentin Tarantino said - 'my pen is my antenna to god' - and if my pen is not picking up any signal from god, then i wont write for the sake of writing.
Favourite horror Movies?
RANJEET I have a few horror films which i really enjoy, but here are a few examples: Audition / The Shining / Candyman / Suspiria / Salems Lot / Black Swan / Mothman Prophecies & House of 1000 Corpses - theres a lot more which inspire me, too.
Who are your favourite Directors?
RANJEET Unfair question haha. I have so many, but as I've matured in my career, my taste in films have changed, thus my interest in directors has changed, also. Im a huge fan of Darren Aronofsky / Nicolas Winding Refn / Paul Thomas Anderson / David Cronenberg / David Fincher / Stanley Kubrick / Lars Von Trier / Park Chan Wook / Bong Joon-ho / Takashi Miike / Cary Fukanaga & Terrence Malick.
Thoughts on The Trees That Bled ?
RANJEET My thoughts on The Trees That Bled - for me, personally, I was drawn to the fact that its based on a true story, that in the world, these kind of things actually happen. Im good friends with Victor, too, so that was also a huge pull for me to come on board the project. When I started out making movies over 6 years ago, I started out by making horror films. The atmosphere, the silence, the intensity, that was all shot with an inexperienced Ranjeet, now, after many years and many movies later, I have reached a point where all of the skills I have gained over the years, I can put into making an incredible movie for Victor and the fans of the novel. The story is captivating, the characters are real, the emotions are real. You'll believe you're in this world when you watch the movie.
